How come I always lag behind? I just can’t come up with an answer.” Mom was aware that her son’s self-respect had been damaged by the ranking system, but she didn’t know what to say to help.
    She was tempted (

Her son and his friend went on to high school that year, but despite trying as hard as he could, her son’s friend still outdid him. But she was proud of her boy for his hard work, sincerely proud. “Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet over the next couple of weeks. But it wasn’t always January l that marked the New Year.

At least 4, 000 years ago the ancient Egyptians and Bahylo-nians (古巴比伦人) marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River(尼罗河)flooded, enriching farmers’ fields with silt(淤泥). This happened at the end of September.

The Babylonians held a festival in spring, on March 23,to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.

The date January l was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 4 6 BC. The month of January was named after the Roman god, Janus (雅努斯). He is pictured with two heads. 0ne head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. That new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.

Around the world, different cultures have their own traditions for welcoming the New Year. The Japanese hang straw rope across the front of their houses to keep out evil spirits and bring happiness and good luck. They also have a good laugh as the year begins to get things started on a lucky note.

In India people like to wear pink, red ,purple and white flowers.  Women favor yellow, the colour of spring. Hindus also leave shrines next to their beds so they see beautiful objects when they wake up.

Canadians enjoy the traditional polar bear swim. People of all ages put on their swimsuits and jump into frozen lakes.

Do you know the Eiffel Tower when you see a picture of it? Of course you do! So do a lot of other people. In fact, I believe more people recognize the Eiffel Tower than any other famous structure in the whole world. That long, long capital A is easy to remember.

The Eiffel Tower is the famous symbol of the city of Paris. It also stands for France just as the Statue of Liberty stands for the United States.

The Eiffel Tower was not very well liked at first, even though the design had been chosen out of seven hundred designs. A contest had been held to find a design for a tower to be built in Paris by 1889.That year would be one hundred years after the war known as the French Revolution. The French Revolution marked the time when the French people broke away from the rule of kings. It was a very important thing to all Frenchmen, and they wanted a special tower to be built to mark the 100 years.

When his design was chosen, Eiffel was fifty-four, rich, and well known for his fine work. He had already designed dams, churches, railroad stations, bridges, harbors and, of course, the framework of the Statue of Liberty. But it was the Eiffel Tower that made him really famous. At first, the French hated the tower. When it was begun in 1887, people called it ugly and useless. They also said that it couldn’t be built safely, and that it would fall down. As the tower gets close to her nineties, she is still in great shape. And the French people have changed their minds. Now they are very proud of their Eiffel Tower. They even think she is beautiful!

"No man is an island" is a well-known line from John Donne's Devotion, written more than three hundred years ago. Even now people still agree with him. Without other people, life became empty and sad.   71

For some of us, though making friends is not difficult, we may not want to make the first move. It is also difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.

There are many books about friendship, but Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence(影响) People, written in 1936, is the most famous.    72    It was later put into 28 languages.

Here is the list of advice from his book:                                                                                            73

Always greet with a smile. Begin with "excuse me" or "would you please", when you want to ask somebody. Remember to say "thank you" and try to be as helpful as you can.

Go out of your way to be nice.                                                                                                          74    Making some soup for a sick neighbour may seem like a little thing to you, but it will make your neighbour feel a lot better.

Remember names.

They say that the sweetest music to a person's ears is the sound of his or her own name.                        75

Try to understand other people's ways and ideas and learn something from them.

Listen patiently.

When someone is talking to you, look at him or her, listen carefully and say something when necessary.

A. This "How to" book about getting along with other people became a best seller.
