第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2,满分40分)

A

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership --- a shop selling cars --- was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the show room.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

My son. The phrase felt difficult and strange the first time I said it, and I had to practice it a thousand times. I started saying the words to myself the day when the ultrasound(超声波) told me we were having a baby.

Finally, my son was born.

The nurse came out of the delivery room, holding a tiny, howling human being wrapped in a white sheet, his small hands and delicate fingers shaking nervously. “Baby Sanchez?” she asked, looking at the room full of expectant fathers.

I stood up, holding my breath. She showed me my baby. “My son,” I whispered. The little guy screamed, “waaaaaaaaaah.”

But in my heart I heard him cry out, “Daaaaaaad!” I don’t care if everyone in the room will say they didn’t hear my baby say that. I called him, “My son,” and he called me “Dad,” and that’s that.

People ask me, “What did I feel at that moment?” I can’t even begin to answer. I’m a writer yet I try hard to find the right words. Joyful isn’t powerful enough. Bliss(狂喜) is not sweet enough. Peaceful isn’t calm enough. Happy isn’t tense enough.

After my son was taken away to the nursery, I sat down and shut my eyes. But tears escaped them away. Then suddenly, my 80-year-old father entered, and we embraced(拥抱).

“Dad,” I whispered.

“My son,” my heart heard him saying.

Suddenly the past 33 years folded into the present and I was now the baby bundled in white, with my father standing over me.

“My son,” I imagined him saying.

“Daaaaaaaaaad!” I cried my little lungs out.

At that point, I knew I was going to be a great father. The old man in front of me seemed to agree. He smiled and we walked out of the room in search of the little human being that would change our lives forever.

A. Because his son is so gifted.

B. Because his father had already set him a good example.

C. Because his father promised to help him.

D. Because he had much experience in bringing up children.

C

You are probably familiar with the saying: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. A piece of recent research carried out by the Chinese University of Hong Kong may change the saying: An apple a day may keep aging away.

The research focused on fruit flies, as they share many genes(基因) with humans. The fruit flies were either fed normally or had an apple extract (浓缩物) added to their diet.

It turned out that those given apple extract lived an average of 55 days - five days longer than the flies that were normally fed. The research group also found it easier for the flies to walk, climb and move about as they aged, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports.

Based on the result, the researchers believed that the antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in the apple extract helped clean up dangerous chemicals that cause illnesses, as well as aging.

In another study, researchers examined diets of thousands of women. They discovered that those who regularly ate apples were 20 percent less likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes.

The apple's genetic code (遗传密码) was discovered recently. It allows scientists to develop more tasty and healthier fruits. Researchers are already using the information to grow red-fleshed apples full of antioxidants that can keep eyes and joints healthy and guard against heart disease and cancer.

Apples that kill the desire (欲望) to eat could also be produced, with the first "extra-healthy" apples on supermarket shelves within just four to five years.

The team that tracks apple DNA is made up of 100 scientists from five countries. Their research also suggests that around 65 million years ago, when dinosaurs began to die off, the plant which would finally become today's apple tree, experienced a great genetic change. The number of many of its genes doubled. The extra genes allowed the apple to adapt to(适应) worse conditions and go through a different evolution (进化) from peaches, strawberries and other related fruits.

49. Fruit flies were chosen for the research because they           .

A. share a similar diet with human beings.    B. share so many genes with humans

C. mainly feed on apples                               D. are commonly used in all kinds of research

50. How can eating apples keep aging away?

A. Antioxidants in apples kill chemicals that cause aging.

B. Apples produce chemicals that can change human genes.

C. The genetic code prevents apples from aging.

D. Apples produce chemicals that allow people to stay young.

51. When dinosaurs began to die off 65 million years ago,

A. all the genes in apples had doubled          B. apple plants stopped their evolution

C. apple genes had greatly improved             D. apples had a similar evolution to other fruits

D

Nowadays, most of us live a busy life. What do you do to keep yourself relaxed? Besides spending time with family, having a glass of wine with friends or reading a book, how about a hobby?

Personally, I’m a collector. I like blue and white pieces the best---blue and white anything! Plates, jars, vases, cups, bowls---I love them all. Collecting items is like something you can’t get enough of. You get one, and you want to have more.

I find collecting to be a fun and inspirational hobby. In many ways, it’s like a puzzle I’m never tired of solving. I look high and low for new pieces to add to my collection. I can often be found visiting Marshell’s, looking over their inexpensive offerings. In fact, I found one of my favorite pieces there.

I’ve mixed inexpensive pieces from Marshell’s with more expensive finds. A lot of times, it’s the piece I’m not looking for that falls into my lap; I find a way to make it part of my blue and white family. What I love about my collection is that when I get inspired, I can move them around the house, mix and match and make things look fresh and new.

Ever since I was a little girl, blue has been my favorite color. I think I got it from my aunt in Mexico. Some of my earliest memories are visiting her in Mexico and sitting on a chair in her kitchen, which had blue and white tiles(瓷砖)from the floor to the ceiling. I would spend countless hours admiring all the beautiful blue and white plates and shiny blue tiles around her kitchen. Once I had a home, I began to build my own blue and white collection.

52. We can infer that in the writer’s opinion,           .

A. having a hobby can help us relax

B. reading a book alone is really boring

C. keeping a hobby is not easy for most of people

D. having a glass of wine with friends is not a good idea

53. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Collecting things requires a lot of money.

B. People always want more than they need.

C. Once you start collecting things, it’s hard to stop.

D. People may not know what they want to collect.

54. If something falls into your lap, it means you           .

A. have been looking for it                            B. get it unexpectedly

C. don’t know what it is                                D. like it very much

55. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?

A. When the writer started collecting things.  B. Why the writer liked her aunt’s things so much.

C. What kind of thing the writer collected first.                                D. When the writer started liking blue things.

Making new friends can be awkward and challenging. However, it doesn’t have to be so hard. Try a few of these simple tips, and you’ll be on your way in no time.

56. _______________

Other people like to know they’re being heard and that their ideas are appreciated. By being a good listener, you let others know that you value what they have to say and, by extension, who they are.

You can make eye contact while others are speaking, and then ask a question or two about what they’re saying. If the conversation goes well, ask the person for his or her phone number or email, then make plans to hang out.

57. __________________

Everyone loves being encouraged. Noticing something you like about someone and sharing it with him/her is a great way to establish a connection and start a conversation.

When giving a compliment, be honest and genuine. Even if you’re complimenting something very small --- like the color of the person’s shoes --- it likely to be appreciated.

58. ____________________

You’re less likely to notice who’s interested in you if you’re constantly checking your email and text messages.

Put away your cell phone from time to time and take a look around. Who seems funny or interesting? Which people in the room have you never talked to? Make a mental note and spend a little time getting to know these people face-to-face.

59. __________________

Having an interest in common with another person gives both of you something to talk about. No matter if that interest is reading, rugby or rock’n’roll, pursuing it with other people is fun and gives you a sense of meaning and belonging. Clubs and teams also teach you how to solve problems and help you bond with others.

60.____________________

A strong desire to help others is attractive to most people. It’s also extremely appealing to colleges and scholarship programs. Channeling this desire into a volunteer project is great way to meet others, build community and work toward common goals.

There are many places to volunteer. Many teens clean up parks, tutor younger students or help at animal shelters or hospitals. Chances are, you’ll find other teens --- and nice people of all ages --- volunteering their time.

Students from different country will visit the UK from Feb. 16 to 28. We paid a visit to a good many of places, like London, Oxford or the Lake District.
